Madang’s Four-Lane Upgrade Begins

Today marks a historic milestone for the “Pearl of the Pacific” as the first layers of hotmix asphalt were laid on the long-awaited Madang Airport to Town CBD four-lane upgrade.

Funded by the National Government under the flagship Connect PNG Program, and implemented through the Department of Works and Highways, this K119.4 million project represents more than just engineering—it is a lifeline for a provincial economy ready to reclaim its status as a premier tourism and commercial hub.

For years, the stretch connecting the airport gateway to the heart of Madang township has been a point of frustration for commuters and a bottleneck for commerce. Today, that narrative began to change as heavy machinery roared to life, transforming dusty, potholed tracks into a modern, high-capacity corridor.

Project Scope Includes:

  • Four lanes of high-grade hotmix asphalt
  • Bypass Road and Steel Arch Bridge over the Wagol River towards Divine Word University into Tusbab
  • Improved drainage systems to withstand Madang’s tropical climate
  • Street lighting and enhanced safety features for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic

The business community has welcomed the commencement of works with renewed optimism. The high-quality road surface is expected to trigger a strong economic ripple effect across sectors:

  • Reduced vehicle maintenance costs and faster freight movement from the airport
  • A professional first impression for international visitors and seamless access to waterfront resorts
  • Increased property values along the corridor and improved foot traffic in the CBD
  • Greater accessibility for local farmers and artisans to supply the central market

“Infrastructure is the backbone of any economy. This K119.4 million investment doesn’t just pave a road—it paves the way for investor confidence to return to Madang.”

While construction will require patience from the public during traffic management phases, the long-term rewards are undeniable. As the hotmix cures and the lanes expand, Madang is positioning itself as a modern, accessible, and business-friendly province—fully aligned with the national vision of a connected Papua New Guinea.
