Resilient Transport Project

The Department of Works and Highways is implementing the Resilient Transport Project for Papua New Guinea with financing from the World Bank. 

The project’s objective is to enhance the resilience and safety of prioritized road infrastructure of the recipient’s highway network, and in case of an eligible crisis or emergency, respond promptly and effectively to it. The project comprises of three components:

  • Component 1: Resilience, Safety Enhancements, and Sustainable Maintenance will finance the rehabilitation and/or extended performance-based maintenance of sections of the Ramu and Hiritano highways. 
  • Component 2: Project Management and Institutional Strengthening will finance support for implementation of the road rehabilitation and maintenance works including i) project management; (ii) road safety; and (iii) technical assistance and training. 
  • Component 3: Contingent Emergency Response Component (CERC) will draw from the uncommitted funds under other project components to cover emergency response.

The project is being implemented in accordance with the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Framework, DOWH’s Environmental and Social Safeguards Policy and Manual, and relevant PNG laws. Key project documents include:
