PRIME MINISTER JAMES MARAPE REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO 'CONNECT PNG' INITIATIVE

Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea — Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has reaffirmed the Marape-Rosso Government's unwavering commitment to the 'Connect PNG' Programme. This transformative national initiative aims to bridge connectivity gaps across Papua New Guinea (PNG), despite recent concerns regarding security and transparency.

VISION AND GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

Prime Minister Marape emphasized the clear vision of connecting every corner of the country. "Connecting PNG is not just about roads; it’s about creating opportunities, empowering communities, and building a resilient economy that benefits all Papua New Guineans," he said. The significance of connectivity in driving economic development is well-documented globally. According to the World Bank’s 2023 report, countries prioritizing infrastructure development have seen an average annual economic growth rate of 4.5%, compared to just 1.2% in countries with limited infrastructure. For instance, China's remarkable growth over the past two decades has been largely driven by massive investments in road and rail networks, contributing to a 400% increase in regional GDP since 2000. The International Transport Forum (ITF) highlighted in their 2024 report that well-developed road networks have been instrumental in lifting over 200 million people out of poverty globally. In Africa, the African Development Bank reported that infrastructure investments have catalysed a 37% increase in regional trade and a 25% rise in rural incomes. These global success stories reinforce PNG’s strategic approach: investing in infrastructure to unlock economic potential, improve livelihoods, and foster inclusive growth.

PROGRESS AND BREAKTHROUGHS

Prime Minister Marape reported significant progress in advancing the 'Connect PNG' initiative. Over the past 12 months, more than 2,000 kilometers of critical road infrastructure have been completed, connecting previously inaccessible regions of the Highlands, Momase, and Southern regions. This progress has facilitated the movement of essential goods, services, and people, directly contributing to economic activity and community development. "We are breaking new ground. We have already connected some of our most remote communities, and this is just the beginning. Our infrastructure development is creating pathways for our people to access markets, education, and healthcare—things that every citizen deserves," he stated.

ADDRESSING SECURITY AND TRANSPARENCY CONCERNS

Acknowledging the concerns raised about security and transparency, Prime Minister Marape reassured the nation of the government's commitment to transparency and accountability. "Our Government has implemented rigorous oversight mechanisms, including independent audits and community consultations, to ensure that every kina spent delivers maximum benefit to our people," he said. He further emphasized that security issues are being addressed head-on: "We have increased security measures along our major infrastructure corridors, working closely with local communities and security agencies to protect our investments and ensure safe construction and operation."

ECONOMIC IMPACT AND FUTURE OUTLOOK

Prime Minister Marape highlighted that the 'Connect PNG' Programme is central to PNG’s economic strategy. He projected that within the next five years, the initiative could lead to a 25% increase in rural productivity and a 15% rise in regional GDP, positioning PNG as a more competitive and integrated economy. "Countries that have invested in infrastructure—like Ethiopia, India, and Brazil—have experienced rapid economic growth and social development. PNG is now on a similar path, with our own unique opportunities. Connecting our nation is about unlocking that full potential," he said. Concluding with a strong message of hope, Prime Minister Marape said, "This is a journey of nation-building. Our infrastructure investments will bring sustainable growth, create jobs, and uplift our people. We are building a future where no part of PNG is left behind."
