New Secretary – Works and Highways

During a press conference held yesterday (15th August 2024) at the Executive Conference Room, DOWH – HQ at 1:00 pm, newly appointed Secretary for Works & Highways Mr. Gibson Holemba said that the National Executive Council (NEC) in its meeting No. 14/2024 on the August 7th 2024 revoked the appointment of incumbent Mr. David Ruma Wereh.

Mr. Holemba introduced his three Executive Directors before him during the press conference, Mr. Brian Alois – Field Operation, Mr. Steven Pup – Highway Management and Mr. John Ame – Corporate Service. Mr. Holemba thanked the Marape-Rosso Government for having confidence in him for taking the reigns from the incumbent to lead the Department and implement the flagship Connect PNG program forward.

Mr. Holemba explained to the media that Mr. Wereh was not terminated nor sacked or sidelined, however, he was reassigned to a new career as Ambassador to Papua New Guinea in the Philippines. Mr. Holemba praised Mr. Wereh for his dedication and commitment to the Department for over 20 plus years. He said Mr. Wereh was recognized by the state and given the title CMG (Companion of the Order of St Michael and St John) a British honor and He was also recognized by the Institute of Engineers Papua New Guinea Inc. and given the title FIEPNG.

Mr. Holemba said Mr. Wereh left a big shoe for him to fit and with the support of his three Executive Directors, they will lead the Department together.
