CDRM Phase 2 – Western Province—Kiunga

For Western Province, the presentation of the proposed project sites was presented by JICA Representative Mr Masato Koinuma on behalf of Western Province a/PWM Mr Samuel Moses who was not present during the JCC Meeting on Tuesday 29th March 2022 at the DoWH Headquarters.
For the pilot project in Kiunga, there are two proposed sites, namely;
- Kononda to Wabag Kona Road 1.3km (Approx. 5km NW of Kiunga Town Center along Kokonda Road).
- Hongas to Timindemasuk Road 1.5km (Approx. 4km NE of Kiunga Town Center along Hogas Feeder Road).
However, only one site shall be selected.
Mr Masato Koinuma said the project purpose and goal is to deliver better road accessibility for people near Kiunga Township, North Fly District of Western Province.
This JICA initiated and facilitated pilot road project in collaboration with DOWH of Western Province is mainly to deliver practical field training for capacity development of DOWH personal for them to contribute further development in Roads Infrastructure.
Possible funding for one of these projects are;
- PNG GOVERNMENT – NATIONAL GOVERNMENT, PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT & DISTRICT GOVERNMENT.
- INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS – JAPANESSE INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION AGENCY (JICA).
- PRIVATE SECTOR PARTNERS – OKTEDI MINING LIMITED VIA TAX CREDIT SCHEME.
The total estimated cost (PGK) of the two proposed pilot projects k3, 000, 000 for Kokonda to Wabag Kona Road 1.3km and total estimated cost (PGK) K1, 800, 000.
In his conclusion, Mr Koinuma clarify that the proposition of the two possible project sites is to give them (DOWH & JICA Team) options to choose the most viable and economical project, which will not only be cost effective but beneficial to the people North Fly Diostrict of Western Province.
Therefore, one of them require funding to be constructed as per the BoQ as it will be a long-term asset that will improve the livelihood of our human resources in this part of the country.
