The Port Moresby city expansion infrastructure program has been well implemented over the last decade under the National Capital District Commission (NCDC) in partnership with the Department of Works and Highways on behalf of the Papua New Guinea Government.
Just recently after the creation of the PNG Road Fund 4 years ago, we now see in 2025 some cleaning works under road maintenance along the 6 Mile to Bautama section Road Maintenance...Road Fund financing. We have a clean road section.... concept to be adopted elsewhere under the PNG road fund financing arrangements going forward.
PNG Road Fund Financing Road Maintenance along the Sir Ruben Taureka 4 lane Highway is 11.2KM from 6 mile to Bautama road section along the Magi Highway towards central province. The highway was constructed and completed by Hebou Construction Ltd and opened for traffic in May 16th 2017 on the outskirts of Port Moresby.
The 4-lane highway is part of the Port Moresby city roads expansion program to help ease the traffic congestion that resulted from influx of commuters from central province traversing into the Port Moresby to access goods and services.
Central Province which shares the boundary with the Port Moresby National Capital District has population of working class, businesses, students, private sector and public servants that resides in their constituency but make daily travels into the city to works, school and do business.
Therefore, the Bautama to 6 mile 4 lane highway was constructed and commissioned from a two carriage way standard highway road into the 4 lane highway to ease traffic congestion which usually slow traffic during week days from Bautama to 6 mile which is now a thing of the past.
The Government vision with the National Capital District Commission under the Governor Hon. Powes Parkop, MP have made significant strides in the last 10 year to successfully implement the city roads infrastructure expansion program and the Sir Taukera 4 lane highway from Bautama to 6 mile towards the outskirts of Port Moresby was one of them.
Others implemented was the Paga Hill ring road, Poreporena freeway, Tokarara to Hanuabada bypass, Baroni Bypass, Gerehu to Nine Mile, nine mile to 14 mile and 9 mile to Laloki Bridge as some examples of the city roads expansion and rehabilitation program with the Kumul flyover from 7 mile to Parliament road.
