Official Opening of the Southern Corridor Missing Link between Central and Milne Bay Province - Sunday 31st August, 2025

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape officially opened the Southern Corridor Missing Link at East Cape, Milne Bay Province, on Sunday 31st August 2025. This milestone under the Connect PNG Program connects Central and Milne Bay Provinces, bringing vital access to health services, schools, markets, and tourism opportunities.

As the ceremonial convoy passed along the new road, locals in traditional attire gathered to celebrate, many witnessing vehicles pass through their land for the first time. The atmosphere was both emotional and joyous, marking a long-awaited achievement for rural communities.

Minister for Works and Highways Hon. Solan Mirisim highlighted the significance of the road on the eve of PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary. He explained that while the road is now open as a Level Three road, more work remains to upgrade its standard. The Magi Highway, running from 6-Mile in Port Moresby to East Cape, Milne Bay, is now officially designated as National Road No. 2.

Prime Minister Marape commended the Department of Works and Highways leadership, expressing pride in witnessing citizens’ excitement along the journey. He reaffirmed that the Connect PNG Program aims to uplift people and ensure equal development benefits across the nation. Before departing, he encouraged landowners to secure proper titles and focus on developing tourism as a key opportunity for Milne Bay and PNG.
