New Kobuta Bridge: A Game-Changer for Obura-Wonenara District
An aerial view captures the newly completed Kobuta Bridge in Tairora, Obura-Wonenara, Eastern Highlands, officially opened last Friday, December 20, 2024, by Hon. John Boito, Member of Parliament for Obura-Wonenara and Minister for Agriculture.
The Kobuta Bridge is a landmark achievement for the district, ensuring reliable, year-round connectivity even during severe floods. Speaking at the opening, Minister Boito highlighted the bridge’s transformative impact on trade, transportation, and access to essential services for the people of Obura-Wonenara.
“This bridge is more than infrastructure—it’s a lifeline for our people,” said Minister Boito. “It connects communities, enables farmers to reach markets, and provides easier access to healthcare and education. It symbolizes our commitment to improving the lives of our people.”
The Kobuta Bridge replaces aging wooden structures with durable iron, designed to withstand the region's challenging weather conditions. It reflects Minister Boito’s vision of building a stronger, more resilient district and aligns with national development priorities.
“This bridge will directly support trade and agricultural development in our district, which has some of the most fertile farming land in Papua New Guinea. It is a critical step in advancing initiatives like the Norikori Commercial Rice Production project and empowering our local farmers,” Minister Boito added.
The completion of the Kobuta Bridge represents progress toward achieving the Marape-Rosso government’s goal of connecting rural Papua New Guinea to essential services and economic opportunities by 2025. It is a milestone that underscores the importance of resilient infrastructure in transforming lives and communities.
